A Series in Sin
Something is wrong with the world! No sane person would disagree with this statement. However, people disagree about what is wrong with the world. Some point to inadequate social constructs as the problem, others blame our woes on flawed political ideology, and still others say that it is a few “bad eggs” that spoil things for the well-in- tentioned majority. While all of these ideas, and countless other the- ories grasp a part of the problem, they ignore the root issue.
Ecclesiastes: Making Sense of Life
“Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” This is the shocking and predominate message of the book of Ecclesiastes. Its premise that life is meaningless, its curious literary structure and prevailing questions of authorship make Ecclesiastes one of the most curious and controversial sections of the scriptural canon. The hard and honest questions raised by the Author’s observation in Ecclesiastes are important for us to explore, because of the common practice, even amongst Christians, to functionally live our life, not with an eternal perspective, but as if this life is all there is. May this study serve to unearth ways in which we are pursuing things that are meaningless and instead, in Christ, find true meaning in the midsts of a vain world.
This booklet serves as a discipleship tool to accompany our fall series in the book of Ecclesiastes. Download the PDF here but don't forget to pick up your printed copy at one of our four services. We pray it is a blessing!
BETTER. A STUDY IN HEBREWS.
We are always looking for something better. It seems that no matter what we have we quickly desire something that will give us a better sense of satisfaction, serenity, security and significance. This reality lies at the root of the human experience. One philosopher suggested that humans are able to experience deep suffering, because of our unique ability to imagine a better reality than we are presently experiencing. It is not wrong to desire something bette… we fall into sin when we seek to satisfy our ultimate longings with something less than divine. CS Lewis says, “Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists… If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. …earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing.”

In order for us to grow in Christ, we must look to God’s Word… not trendy cultural maxims (2 Timothy 3:16).
Rather than conveying thoughts, ideas, and stories with scriptural support we seek to present God’s Word as it is and let it speak to our cultural context, instead of allowing societal trends to inform our theology.
